DAVID LUIZ
Chelsea are close to announcing the re-signing of David Luiz
after agreeing a fee in the region of £32million with Paris Saint-Germain.
The Blues sold Luiz to the Ligue 1 champions in 2014, but
Antonio Conte wants him back to strengthen his defensive options.
But does it make sense to bring the curly-haired Brazilian
to Stamford Bridge for a second time? Rory Jennings of the ChelseaFansChannel tells
us what he thinks.
At a club like Chelsea, players come and go and an alarming
rate. We give them a clap as they are presented on the pitch before a home game
and then more often than not, we read that they have been loaned out, never to
be seen in Chelsea blue again.
However, every now and again a player comes in who touches
your heart. A player who understands what your club is about and whose
personality demands that you, as a supporter, embrace him as a favourite.
David Luiz was one of those players. His outlandish sense of
humour, combined with his ability to ping in the most sublime goals made him
easy to love, so the fact he is on the brink of returning to Chelsea fills me
with nothing but joy.
I confess that I have a special love for Luiz (as I do for
any player who played on that special night in Munich) but even if we view the
player on a superficial level for a moment, he would dramatically improve our
team. His strength, competitive edge, ability with both feet and courage in the
air would make him a fine addition to our side at both ends of the pitch.
While I'll be the first to concede that on occasions he
behaves like an idiot, on his day, he is simply excellent.
We were down to our bare bones, playing in a Champions
League final in Munich against a very strong Bayern Munich team. Luiz played
through the pain barrier to play a brilliant 120 minutes of football before
lashing home a penalty and rubbing the Munich fans' faces in it.
That's the kind of man I want in my side. He then celebrated
by wearing a Chelsea jester hat and sitting on the crossbar. Yes please.
I could actually see a situation where the passion exerted
by Conte on the touchline would be continued over the white line by Luiz. His
commitment and desire to win are exactly what we were missing last
season.
I would go so far as to say that if he were a Chelsea player
last year, the calamitous season that ensued wouldn't have been half as bad.
Talking about Luiz's past exploits like this makes it sound
like he is older than he actually is. He is still a player in his prime. He has
won everything in France and could well be ready for the next challenge.
Luiz playing for Chelsea under Conte could be as beneficial
for Luiz himself as it would be for the club. We know he has the propensity for
an error but I think the manager's authoritarian style will not allow for such
mistakes. He will help Luiz rid his game of such glitches, resulting in a
flawless player.
I know that I get a little bit impassioned and nostalgic
when talking about Luiz but ridding myself of all sentimentality, the bottom
line is Chelsea will be a better team with Luiz in the squad and for that
reason (as well as all the others) I will be over the moon if completes his
return to us as expected.
