Jack Wilshere is at a crossroads - his Bournemouth move is a desperate last throw of the dice

JACK WILSHERE

Jack Wilshere has reached a crossroads in his career and his move to Bournemouth is a desperate last throw of the dice.

The next year will effectively be make-or-break and either re-establish himself as one of England’s best midfielders or perhaps signal the end of his time at Arsenal.

It must be seen as a fall from grace for Wilshere because not long ago it would have been unthinkable for the 24-year-old to be playing for Bournemouth.

After all, this was the player who set Europe alight back when Wilshere’s stats and performance even matched Barcelona legends Xavi and Andres Iniesta when Arsenal beat the Spanish giants in the Champions League at the Emirates in February 2011.

If that was a career-high defining moment, then the heartbreak which has followed has taken a huge toll on Wilshere both mentally and physically.

Beset by injuries causing him to miss Euro 2012, suffer two long-term problems - including a broken leg which forced him to miss much of last season - and a worrying drop of form and confidence.

Wilshere went to Euro 2016 but lacked match sharpness and then started this season at Arsenal well down the pecking order in a growing list of midfielders.

Granit Xhaka was the big money summer arrival for £30m and they already have Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny and Aaron Ramsey.
It left Wilshere struggling for games and he looked well off the pace when he came on as a substitute at Watford on Saturday.
Being left out of the England squad was perhaps the final straw and the moment that Wilshere knew he had to leave Arsenal to get his career back on track.

The loan option was first discussed two weeks ago but when Arsenal finally sanctioned it after further talks there were no shortage of takers.

In fact, there were 22 offers because those in the game know that Wilshere is a special talent and if he can regain his form, fitness and confidence then he will go back to being one of the best midfielders in England.

Crystal Palace and Bournemouth were the leading contenders in the Premier League while Watford and West Brom also enquired after Arsenal made it clear they would not loan him to a top four rival.

Wilshere met with Palace boss Alan Pardew and Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe in a football agency’s offices in Soho on Tuesday evening. It was almost like an interview process. Pardew went first and impressed Wilshere. Howe went next and really blew Wilshere away.

The added attraction of his best pal, former Arsenal youth team mate Benik Afobe, being at Bournemouth was another big plus as well as Howe’s style of football, regular games and the chance to shine in the Premier League.

There were offers from abroad - including Roma and even AC Milan expressed interest late on - but Arsenal had reservations about dealing with Italian clubs for various reasons.

But Bournemouth were quick off the mark, happy to pay a £2million loan fee, all the money up front and showed a willingness that convinced Arsenal and also Wilshere to move to the South Coast.

Wilshere is being bold to push for the loan move himself. It would have been easy to stay put but he wants to play and wants to get his England place back as he is passionate about playing for his country.

But Wilshere has two years left on his contract at the Emirates, knows the next 12 months will define whether he goes back to Arsenal for the long term or if it is the beginning of the end for him as an Arsenal midfielder.

With Wilshere’s determination and spirit, never write him off and Bournemouth will give him the platform and opportunity to get back to the top.

Juventus officially land Cuadrado

JUAN CUADRADO

Juan Cuadrado has returned to Juventus after putting pen to paper on a deal that will see him remain with the side until 2019.

The winger spent last season on loan with the Bianconeri after an unsuccessful spell at Chelsea, and he will remain with the Italian side for the foreseeable future after Wednesday’s move.

As revealed on the Juventus website, Cuadrado joins on loan until 2019 for a fee of €5 million a season. The Bianconeri hold the right to make the move permanent, though they will be obligated to if certain team results are achieved over that time.

At that point the Old Lady will have to sign Cuadrado for €25m, minus any loan fees already paid.

The deal also includes an additional €4m bonus clause should Juventus achieve certain sporting results over that time.

Cuadrado spent last season on loan at Juventus, netting five goals in 40 appearances an Old Lady won the Scudetto and Coppa Italia.

Chelsea signs Marcos Alonso

MARCOS ALONSO

Chelsea Football Club has today brought Marcos Alonso back to the Premier League with the completion of the defender’s transfer from Fiorentina.

The 25-year-old Spanish left-back is the first defender signed by Antonio Conte following the recruitment of a forward, a midfielder and a goalkeeper to his squad. He has signed a five-year contract.

Alonso said: ‘I’m very happy. It’s a step up in my career and I think this is the perfect place for me to continue developing. It’s time for me to win some titles.

‘It was an easy decision for me to make when I heard the club were interested in signing me. My family and close friends know Chelsea is the club I have dreamed about playing for so I’m really excited about the challenge and I'm looking forward to working with my new team-mates.’

Alonso was born in Madrid and is the son and grandson of former Spain internationals. He was a youth and B-team player for Real Madrid, before being handed his one first team appearance there by Manuel Pellegrini in April 2010 as a late substitute in a win against Racing Santander.

That summer he joined Bolton Wanderers as a 19-year-old and was a team-mate of Gary Cahill for one-and-a-half years prior to the England international’s move to Chelsea.

Alonso stayed in the north-west for three seasons, two of those in the Premier League, and made 46 appearances, scoring five goals.

After half a season at Fiorentina, he was recruited on loan for the second half of the 2013/14 campaign by Sunderland manager Gustavo Poyet, who selected the Spaniard in the League Cup final against Manchester City. Alonso also played in the Sunderland win at Stamford Bridge which ended Jose Mourinho’s 77-game undefeated league run at our stadium. It was his volley that led to the visitors equalising that April day.

Alonso then returned to Fiorentina where he established himself as a regular in the team as a left-back, wing-back or in a back-three. He leaves La Viola with 85 appearances and five goals scored.

Marcos Alonso moves a step closer to Chelsea move after £23 million fee is agreed with Fiorentina

MARCOS ALONSO

Chelsea have agreed a £23 million fee with Fiorentina to sign Marcos Alonso.

Personal terms are also understood to have been agreed and the left-back is only a medical away from conforming the move.

Talks had been ongoing for days after Antonio Conte made the 25-year-old a top target. It comes after the Italian allowed Baba Rahman to join Schalke on loan while Kenedy, another player who Chelsea have used at left-back, joined Watford.

Alonso, who played for Bolton between 2010 and 2013, was keen to return to English football and an official announcement is expected this afternoon.

Yet sources inside Stamford Bridge have said that they are surprised by the 'ridiculous' figure for Alonso, who also spent six months on loan with Sunderland in 2014.

Defensive recruitment may not stop at Alonso for the Blues, with a shock move £32m move for David Luiz in the pipeline with a season-long loan for Valencia defender Aymen Abdennour a last resort.

David Luiz played through the pain barrier to win the Champions League… him returning to Chelsea fills me with nothing but joy

DAVID LUIZ

Chelsea are close to announcing the re-signing of David Luiz after agreeing a fee in the region of £32million with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Blues sold Luiz to the Ligue 1 champions in 2014, but Antonio Conte wants him back to strengthen his defensive options.

But does it make sense to bring the curly-haired Brazilian to Stamford Bridge for a second time? Rory Jennings of the ChelseaFansChannel tells us what he thinks.

At a club like Chelsea, players come and go and an alarming rate. We give them a clap as they are presented on the pitch before a home game and then more often than not, we read that they have been loaned out, never to be seen in Chelsea blue again.

However, every now and again a player comes in who touches your heart. A player who understands what your club is about and whose personality demands that you, as a supporter, embrace him as a favourite.

David Luiz was one of those players. His outlandish sense of humour, combined with his ability to ping in the most sublime goals made him easy to love, so the fact he is on the brink of returning to Chelsea fills me with nothing but joy.

I confess that I have a special love for Luiz (as I do for any player who played on that special night in Munich) but even if we view the player on a superficial level for a moment, he would dramatically improve our team. His strength, competitive edge, ability with both feet and courage in the air would make him a fine addition to our side at both ends of the pitch.

While I'll be the first to concede that on occasions he behaves like an idiot, on his day, he is simply excellent.

We were down to our bare bones, playing in a Champions League final in Munich against a very strong Bayern Munich team. Luiz played through the pain barrier to play a brilliant 120 minutes of football before lashing home a penalty and rubbing the Munich fans' faces in it.

That's the kind of man I want in my side. He then celebrated by wearing a Chelsea jester hat and sitting on the crossbar. Yes please.

I could actually see a situation where the passion exerted by Conte on the touchline would be continued over the white line by Luiz. His commitment and desire to win are exactly what we were missing last season.

I would go so far as to say that if he were a Chelsea player last year, the calamitous season that ensued wouldn't have been half as bad.

Talking about Luiz's past exploits like this makes it sound like he is older than he actually is. He is still a player in his prime. He has won everything in France and could well be ready for the next challenge.

Luiz playing for Chelsea under Conte could be as beneficial for Luiz himself as it would be for the club. We know he has the propensity for an error but I think the manager's authoritarian style will not allow for such mistakes. He will help Luiz rid his game of such glitches, resulting in a flawless player.

I know that I get a little bit impassioned and nostalgic when talking about Luiz but ridding myself of all sentimentality, the bottom line is Chelsea will be a better team with Luiz in the squad and for that reason (as well as all the others) I will be over the moon if completes his return to us as expected.

Jack Wilshere joins AS Roma on loan

WILSHERE

AS Roma have ‘agreed terms’ with Jack Wilshere’s camp over a move to Serie A, according to reports.

The Arsenal midfielder, 24, told pals he is leaning towards a loan move to Bournemouth rather than Crystal Palace.

But Roma have now come to an agreement with Wilshere’s representatives and are awaiting approval from the Gunners, according to BBC Sport.

Wilshere met Cherries boss Eddie Howe yesterday and is impressed with his vision and the way he likes to play.

The England ace’s good pal and former Arsenal team-mate Benik Afobe is also at the club.

Crystal Palace chief Alan Pardew also spoke to Wilshere yesterday and is still hoping to land the Emirates man.

A source told SunSport: “Jack really likes Eddie Howe. He was very impressed with him and has been making lots of phone calls to people about Bournemouth.

“He says he is leaning towards going there – rather than Palace.

“But he is taking his time today before making the final decision.”

The Cherries are battling it out with Roma, Crystal Palace and AC Milan to sign the Arsenal midfielder who is set for a loan move away from the Emirates.

And Eddie Howe’s men have an ace up their sleeve in their efforts to clinch the deadline day deal in the shape of their forward Afobe.

The 23-year-old is one of Wilshere’s closest friends in football after he grew up in the Arsenal youth system with him.

And Afobe has been working hard trying to persuade his old pal from the Gunners academy to make a season-long switch to the south coast.

Afobe has spoken highly of the set-up at Bournemouth and of the coaching methods of Howe.

Wilshere held talks with Howe in London yesterday, along with a separate meeting with Palace boss Pardew.

Italian giants Milan made their interest known early yesterday evening, but they are now outsiders in the race to sign him.

Wilshere has asked to leave Arsenal after being frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities this season.

After almost three years disrupted by injury, the England star knows he needs regular football to return to full match sharpness and to start fulfilling his true potential.

Bony joins Stoke City on loan

BONY

Stoke City have signed Wilfried Bony on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

The Ivory Coast international arrives at the bet365 Stadium with a reputation of being one of European footballs most prolific frontmen - netting 130 goals in just 278 career appearances.

Whilst the vast majority of those goals have been scored on the continent he boasts tremendous Premier League pedigree too, having averaged almost a goal every other game for Swansea City.

That prompted the Citizens to conclude a £28M deal to sign the powerful striker last January, although he struggled for regular game-time at the Etihad Stadium due to the form of Sergio Aguero.

Moments after completing the deal, Mark Hughes told stokecityfc.com: “Bringing Wilfried in was a no-brainer for us to be perfectly honest, because he knows the Premier League and has scored plenty of goals at this level.

“He has power, speed and very good physical attributes which will undoubtedly help us, and his technical and finishing skills are outstanding too.

“Eighteen months ago he was being bought for a hugely significant amount of money, so we know that we are bringing in a top quality striker."

He added: “Everybody is aware of Wilfried and what he is capable of, and it was no surprise that one of the bigger clubs came in for him on the back of his performances for Swansea - the only surprise has been that he didn’t enjoy the success with Manchester City that we all thought he would.”

Albert Adomah Joins Aston Villa

ALBERT ADOMAH

Championship side Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Ghanaian winger Albert Adomah from Middlesbrough on a three-year deal.

Adomah left Middlesbrough for Villa after failing to cement a staring berth with the club and rejected a contract extension in the process.

The 27-year-old is expected to team up with fellow Ghanaian international Jordan Ayew.

Adomah’s presence with the club could help Villa’s fight to return back to the top flight aside looking forward to make next year’s AFCON team.

JUST IN: Wa All Stars Emmanuel Ocran earns late Black Stars call-up

EMMANUEL OCRAN

Wa All Stars promising winger Emmanuel Ocran has earned a late call-up to join Ghana’s squad preparing for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda this Saturday.

The surprise comes just three days after his hat-trick condemned Dreams FC 3-0 in the Ghana Premier League to give the Northern Blues a three-point lead at the top.

Ocran, 20, can play on the wing and also as an attacker.

Last month, he was on trial at Swiss second-tier side FC Schaffhausen.

Opare Addo call on Hearts of Oak supporters to rally behind Yaw Preko

YAW PREKO

Public Relations Officer of Accra Hearts of Oak, Opare Addo has called on the supporters of the club to support the management decision to appoint Yaw Preko as the acting head coach of the club because they know Yaw Preko will not disappoint them.

Sergio Traguil was appointed as the head coach of the club when American-Japanese tactician, Kenichi Yatshuhatshi parted ways with club.

The performance of the Accra based club have not been consistent when Kenechi left. Many supporters have called on the management of the club to show the Portuguese tactician the exit door.

After playing twelve matches played in the second round in the ongoing Ghana Premier League, Sergio was able to win three, lose two and have drawn seven with 42 points lying on the 4th position with six points between league leaders Wa All Stars.

Speaking Asempa Sports, Opare said, “We as a club we looked at the positive side and decided to appoint Yaw Preko as the head coach of the club when Kenichi left the club but unfortunately he was on national assignment with the U-20 so we decided to bring in Sergio who was at that time coaching the youth team but we have realized that Yaw Preko is now needed at the moment so we have send Sergio back to the youth level.

“We don’t want to lose anything again because mathematically we are not out of the title race so nobody should rule us out. We are trying to do anything to ensure that and I want to call on the supporters to support the club and the decision of the management because we know that Yaw Preko will not disappoint us.” Opare added.

Ex-Black Stars player Augustine Arhinful calls on Accra Hearts of Oak Management to sit up

AUGUSTINE ARHINFUL

Former Black Stars player, Augustine Arhinful has called on the management of Accra Hearts of Oak to sit and take better decisions that will benefit the club.

The club have decided to give the mantle to Yaw Preko to be the head coach of the club. This indicates that the Accra based club have changed three coaches within a season.

The Phobian club begun very well this season under the auspices of American-Japanese tactician Kenichi Yatshuhatshi but the performance of the club have sunk since the appointment of Sergio Traguil as the head of the club.

But the former Borussia Dortmund star says the management of the club should sit up and take better decisions that will benefit the club.

“My question is that why wouldn’t Yaw Preko succeed? The truth is that Hearts of Oak always have problems with coaches and when they brought in Sergio Traguil after the exit of Kenichi, I heard the general manager saying that he is the best and now they have demoted him to the youth level?” Arhinful told Asempa Sports.

“It clearly shows that the club don’t know what they are doing and it has proven to the supporters of the club that the management of the club have failed.

“There is no doubt that Hearts of Oak is a big club club but they should sit down and plan because when you look at the players that play for the club, it tells you that they are failing to plan.

He continued, “Now, Yaw Preko becomes the third coach they have appointed within a season and I am praying that he succeed. I know for the fact that, every Monday the coach have to meet the technical team but during that meeting, you don’t give directions to the coach as to what to do because if this happens there is always uneasiness within the club and I don’t think they did to Jones Attuquayefio so I will say that they should allow Yaw Preko to work as they have appointed him as the coach of the club.”

Remy eager to make to Palace fan happy

REMY

French striker Loic Remy is confident of being handed more playing time at Crystal Palace to regain his form and fitness after finding it difficult to break into the first team at parent club Chelsea.

Remy, who agreed to a season-long loan at Palace on Tuesday, has largely found himself on the bench since he joined Chelsea from Queens Park Rangers in 2014, making just nine Premier League starts with the London club.

The 29-year-old, however, will now reunite with Alan Pardew, having worked with the manager at Newcastle United, in a bid to rediscover his scoring touch.

"We had a good time together (at Newcastle) and I'm pleased to be back under him because I think he is a very good manager. He can give me a lot, and I hope to do the same for him and the team," Remy told the club's website (www.cpfc.co.uk).

"It's a really good opportunity for me. I was at Chelsea for two years and it was a bit complicated because I didn't play that much, so it is very good to be here now and hopefully I'll have some chances to play.

"After three years without playing much the main thing is to get back fit, and after that there will be no problem because I know what I can bring to the team."

Remy also hopes to build a strong partnership with fellow striker Christian Benteke, who joined Palace for a club record fee £27 million earlier this month.

"Benteke is a very good player and is very strong so I'm sure that we can play together. I think the choice to buy us two strikers is going to be a good one," Remy said of the Belgian.

Sports Ministry to pay US$ 2,500 winning bonus to Black Stars

BLACK STARS

Ghana’s Sports Ministry is ready to pay US$ 2,500 as winning bonus to the Black Stars for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda on Saturday in Accra.

The amount is the lowest to be paid by the state to the senior national team in two decades.

The Ministry has adopted this approach because Black Stars coach and the Ghana FA rejected its proposal to call up home-based players for the qualifier.

Invited foreign-based players had to pay from their own pockets to buy air tickets with deputy captain Andre Ayew buying tickets for seven others after government said he could not finance their fares.

"Since they’ve decided out of their own volition to sacrifice for the nation by paying for their tickets, then they should be ready to take what we have for them as well,” Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye told the Graphic Sports.

"I also hope the players would not use it as an excuse to boycott any future match and hold the nation to ransom like it happened in Brazil."

It would be recalled that Vanderpuye negotiated with the players and reduced the winning bonus per match from US$ 10,000 to US$ 8,000.

Apologize to Sarah Kwabla and have your peace or you continue like this – Maurice Ampaw warns Asamoah Gyan

GYAN AND LAWYER AMPAW

Lawyer Dr. Maurice Ampaw has revealed that the Black Stars skipper, Asamoah Gyan is under a charm and will not succeed in his career until he renders a public apology to Ms. Sarah Kwabla.

He demands that the Shanghai SIPG striker must apologize to the family of the lady she allegedly had anal sex with before he can make any exploits in his current bleak football career.

Asamoah Gyan was lacing his boots to play for Reading FC in the English Championship this season but shockingly failed a medical test on Tuesday as the media reported.

Maurice Ampaw who is counsel for Sarah Kwabla believes this could be as a result of the bad deeds of Asamoah Gyan who will continue to be haunted spiritually until he begs for his conduct.

Speaking to Kumasi based Otec FM, Lawyer Ampaw said, “I played a critical role in Sarah Kwabla’s case in court. A lot of Ghanaians insulted the girl and her family in the media. If there is a physical warfare there is also a spiritual warfare because the family is in pain.

“He won the media war but there is a spiritual he needs to fight. You disgraced her and she also cursed you that you will never prosper”.

Chelsea make £30m bid for former defender David Luiz

DAVID LUIZ

David Luiz could be set for a stunning return to Chelsea with the Premier League club offering £30m plus add-ons to Paris Saint-Germain, according to Sky sources.

The 29-year-old Brazilian left Stamford Bridge for France two years ago in a £50m deal which was a world record fee for a defender.

But with just a day to go until Transfer Deadline Day, Sky Sports News HQ understands discussions are ongoing with Luiz reportedly keen on a return to west London.

New Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has made it clear a centre-back was top of his priority list with moves for Alessio Romagnoli at AC Milan and Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli falling through so far.

Sky in Italy reported last week that Chelsea's £30m bid for Romagnoli was rejected, and that there was a "90 per cent" chance of Koulibaly not moving to Conte's team.

Chelsea first purchased Luiz in January 2011 from Benfica for £21m.

In his three-year stay in west London, Luiz made 143 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, scoring 12 goals.

Premier League Clubs Leads Transfer Spree

PREMIER LEAGUE

The cashed-up English Premier League led a record-breaking raid by Europe's top clubs before the transfer window slams shut Wednesday, with Arsenal alone paying more than €60 million for German defender Shkodran Mustafi and Spanish striker Lucas Perez.

The Premier League's TV riches have fuelled transfer inflation across the continent, with Inter Milan and Barcelona paying top dollar for Brazil's exciting Olympic gold medal-winning striker Gabriel 'Gabigol' Barbosa and Valencia goal-scorer Paco Alcacer respectively.

About €50 million were spent on the pair and most analysts predict European spending will easily be the highest yet when the two-month transfer window closes -- between 1600 GMT for the Bundesliga to 2200 GMT for the Premier League.

Spending by England's 20-club Premier League alone was expected to bust the £1 billion barrier after Manchester United set a new world record with the 89 million pound purchase this month of French midfielder Paul Pogba.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was one of the late big-spenders. The Gunners, eighth in the early standings, spent an estimated £35 million to bring German international defender Mustafi from Valencia.

"He is at the right age," Wenger said of the 24-year-old, who was in Germany's 2014 World Cup-winning squad. "And he has good experience," Wenger added of the big defender who was in the German team that reached the semi-finals at Euro 2016.

Arsenal paid another £17 million for Deportivo La Coruna striker Perez, according to media reports, while they have also bought Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka, Japanese forward Takuma Asano and young English centre-back Rob Holding.

"He’s not only a goalscorer, he’s a guy who combines well with partners, who can give a final ball and makes good runs," said Wenger of Perez.

Arsenal defender Serge Gnabry returned to Germany with Werder Bremen.

PREMIER PRICES

Inter Milan confirmed the signing of Barbosa on his 20th birthday late on Tuesday.

"Gabigol is an Inter player," the Serie A giants said in a statement, announcing a five-year contract.

Inter did not release financial details but Gazzetta dello Sport website reported Inter paid the Brazilian club 27.5m euros for 'Gabigol', who has drawn comparisons with Neymar.

Spain international Alcacer joined Barcelona from Valencia in a €30 million, five-year deal, the Catalan side announced.

The 20-year-old, who scored 13 goals in 34 appearances for Valencia last season, will heighten competition in the Barcelona frontline already led by Neymar, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Other big-name deals are likely as top players seek a regular game in increasingly competitive squads. Chelsea let French international striker Loic Remy go on loan to Crystal Palace for one season. Palace are also among contenders to take Arsenal's England midfielder Jack Wilshere on loan.

Manchester City's out-of-favour England goalkeeper Joe Hart was set to complete a move to Torino in Italy. In France, just six months after signing for Monaco, Brazilian Vagner Love has moved to Alanyaspor in Turkey, another country where clubs have become big spenders.

But the English Premier League's £5.14bn, three-season television deal has set a pace that few other championships can keep up with.

Christian Heidel, sporting director for German club Schalke said the Premier League has forced up prices everywhere.

"If English managers are on the phone, then the (transfer) sums are automatically higher," Heidel said on a talk show for Kicker magazine.

"If the negotiations are within Germany, then it is often difficult to exclude the higher sums from England."

Schalke this month sold Germany winger Leroy Sane, 20, to Manchester City for a reported 43m euros. With additional fees, the figure could rise to 50 million for a player who made just 47 Bundesliga appearances before City had signed him.

Sports Minister insist there is no money for Rwanda qualifier

SPORTS MINISTER

Minister of Youth and Sports Nii Lante Vanderpuye has defended government’s refusal to foot any bills for the 2017 Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda because he insists it doesn’t matter.

The Ministry says it has no money to pay for airfares and winning bonuses for the game against Rwanda which is effectively a dead rubber with the Black Stars already through to the tournament in Gabon next year.

Vanderpuye says he had engaged the Black Stars Management Committee about the need to save cost before the squad was announced as he laid out the bases for the cash freeze in an interview with Accra based 3FM.

“We think we need to cut cost. We have already qualified for the Nations Cup so the outcome of this game is not important. Why do we want to kill a fly with a sledge hammer?” Vanderpuye asked. “We don’t have the finances. When we were playing more important games we did not make this request. The situation now demands that this is the most prudent step to take.”

The Ministry says it simply has no budget for the game against Rwanda and applauded the widely publicized decision by the country’s players to pay their own way for the match.

“If the players decide to be patriotic and decide to buy their own ticket and come and play, not ask for any winning bonus and go, I would be happy because this is what I have been saying all along; that they need to be patriotic.

“We don’t have a budget for this match. It is that simple. We have other more competing demands. The money is not mine, it belongs to the state.

“The issue has to do with resources. We don’t have it. I have to go round borrowing, beg and all that to get the money. We owe on hotels, travel and tours for tickets and we owe the Black Stars on outstanding bonus. The money is not there. We need others to make the sacrifice.”

There have been fears that the feud could also affect the Black Stars’ long term on the field of play but Vanderpuye insists it should not.

“I don’t think this should affect the players and our performance in anyway. They are professionals and should focus on playing. These things do not and should not affect how they play.”

The former broadcaster also suggested part of his problems with the GFA stems from what he calls a crusade to bring sanity to aspects of the way football is run in Ghana.

“I am committed to bringing some sanity to the management of football and the national team. I won’t sacrifice those principles for anyone. Certain aspects of our football has been mismanaged and Ghanaians have not been happy with that.”

Lawyer files suit to get Mugabe in jail again

MOTIE 3

A Sunyani-based lawyer has filed a fresh suit in court challenging the powers of the president under Article 72, with the ultimate aim of reversing the remission of three persons jailed for contempt.

Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution gives the president the power to grant pardon or remit sentences of persons serving various jail terms, but Alfred Tuah–Yeboah is arguing that those convicted for contempt do not qualify for remission.

He is therefore praying the court to reverse an order issued by President John Mahama to grant freedom to three contemnors – Godwin Ako Gunn, Alistair Nelson and Salifu Maase alias Mugabe.

The three were released from prison Friday, August 26, 2016 after the president in a statement on Monday granted them remission. They were serving four months jail term after being found guilty by the Supreme Court for issuing death threats on justices of the apex court.

In a suit filed on August 26, Mr Tuah-Yeboah sought “A declaration that upon a true and proper construction and / or interpretation of Article 72 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, the power of the President of the Republic of Ghana to exercise prerogative of mercy is limited to criminal convictions and convictions from contempt proceedings initiated by the Attorney General of the Republic of Ghana only.”

The legal practitioner therefore asked the Supreme Court to declare the remission granted by the president, “void and of no legal effect,”

“An order of the Honourable Court reversing the remission of sentence which was granted to the three (3) persons mentioned supra and the said convicts be made to serve the remaining prison terms,” he said in his writ.

“Your Lordships, the Judiciary is the only arm of Government that has been preserved since independence even in the adversities of Military rule. This tradition must be continued and hence any power of the President that seeks to assault the power of the Court to punish for contempt, by regard to Article 72 must be fiercely resisted. For if this power is left at the mercy of the President, our fledgling democracy may not stand the test of time,” Tuah-Yeboah prayed.

FIFA President Reveals 40 Teams World Cup in the Future

                                                              FIFA PRESIDENT

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has indicated future World Cups could feature 40 teams following the successful expansion of the European Championship.

Infantino claimed the performance of smaller nations at Euro 2016, increased for the first time this year to 24 teams, and has strengthened the case for allowing an extra eight nations to qualify for the World Cup.

In an interview with Blick, Infantino discussed pressure from FIFA's member nations to grow the quadrennial showpiece event, saying: "A World Cup is still today not only a football game, but something for the people.

"Look at the mood of the Icelanders, the Welsh, the Albanians or Hungarians. That's great, this euphoria. What is happening in those countries, you have got to be proud of it.

"Switching the World Cup from 32 to 40 teams is high, but it still achieves the goal of FIFA - to develop football in the world. So advertising is still priceless."

The 46-year-old, who was cleared earlier this month of breaching FIFA's code of ethics, also claimed the Olympic football tournament requires a rethink.

The competition, in which teams can field only three players over the age of 23, does not enjoy the prestige of other international football events.

"This is indeed a problem and a sensitive issue that we must address together with the International Olympic Committee," he said.

"The tournament is neither fish nor bird in this form and the men's game, in which primarily under-23 players and a few extra are played, is not a good solution.

"In addition, the football calendar is too tight. You have to discuss this seriously again.

"By contrast, the women's football developed superbly at the Olympics."

Chelsea's Eden Hazard praises Antonio Conte and slams Jose Mourinho

                                                               EDEN HAZARD

Eden Hazard appeared to take a sly dig at Jose Mourinho after inspiring Chelsea to a 3-0 win over Burnley.

Hazard struggled for form as the Blues toiled under Mourinho last season but looks reinvigorated under new boss Antonio Conte.

The Belgian scored a superb opening goal, racing half the length of the pitch before curling home from 20 yards after just nine minutes.

He continued to torment the Burnley defence as further goals from Willian and Victor Moses maintained Chelsea's perfect start to the campaign.

And afterwards Hazard praised the impact of Conte, who enjoyed a successful playing career with Juventus and Italy, unlike Mourinho who never made the grade as a player.

"He's tried to give us confidence," Hazard told Chelsea TV. "He knows players because he used to be one.

"We had one bad season but we are trying to do better. He tries to motivate us and we are giving everything.

"He told me to sometimes to go inside, sometimes to stay wide and open up the game. He wants me to score some goals and make a difference."

It was a tough afternoon for Burnley, who offered nothing in attack and could have been on the end of a bigger defeat but for some fine saves from Tom Heaton.

"We know they're a top side but we're really disappointed with that," the goalkeeper told Burnley's website. "We didn't go about it how we usually do and came up very short.

"From minute one, it wasn't what we're about and it's frustrating, especially after the highs of (beating Liverpool) last week.

"It was a busy afternoon and if you don't quite get it right these teams can hurt you with the quality they have out there.

"The biggest frustration though is ourselves because we weren't at it and we've come unstuck. It's a lesson for us and hopefully we can put it right over the international break."

Nii Lante Vanderpuye Fezzes Air Tickets for Black Stars Players

                                              YOUTH AND SPORTS MINISTER
Massive confusion has rocked Ghana's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda after Youth and Sports Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye ordered the freezing of air tickets for invited foreign-based players.

In a shocking show of power-play, the government official has warned Travel Matters- the traveling agency of the Ghana FA to stop the traveling arrangement of the players, just seven days before the team takes on the Amavubi in Accra.

The move appears orchestrated to ensure locally-based players are forced on Coach Avram Grant which has been an agenda of the Minister with claims that the Black Stars have already qualified.

The stand-off between the Ghana FA and Nii Lante Vanderpuye is well documented with the Member of Parliament throwing constant unprovoked jabs on the football federation.

There has been a clandestine move by the current Sports Minister to alter the player selection of the team after Avram Grant named his squad for the final AFCON qualifier which included his largely predictable squad.

According to Ghanasoccernet, the situation has left several of the players angered as it has affected their traveling plans but are willing to report for the game to serve their country despite the Minister's recent attitude and comments towards the team.

Most of the angry players are said to have been shown whatsapp messages the Minister sent to some journalist indicating that he will compel the handlers of the team to use only local players for the game.

There is a massive disquiet in the team with fears the stand-off could damage the country's chances of qualifying to the 2018 World Cup which starts in October.

The Black Stars of Ghana are set to play the Amavubi of Rwanda on Saturday, 3rd September in Accra at exactly 15:30 GMT.
