Marcos Alonso moves a step closer to Chelsea move after £23 million fee is agreed with Fiorentina

MARCOS ALONSO

Chelsea have agreed a £23 million fee with Fiorentina to sign Marcos Alonso.

Personal terms are also understood to have been agreed and the left-back is only a medical away from conforming the move.

Talks had been ongoing for days after Antonio Conte made the 25-year-old a top target. It comes after the Italian allowed Baba Rahman to join Schalke on loan while Kenedy, another player who Chelsea have used at left-back, joined Watford.

Alonso, who played for Bolton between 2010 and 2013, was keen to return to English football and an official announcement is expected this afternoon.

Yet sources inside Stamford Bridge have said that they are surprised by the 'ridiculous' figure for Alonso, who also spent six months on loan with Sunderland in 2014.

Defensive recruitment may not stop at Alonso for the Blues, with a shock move £32m move for David Luiz in the pipeline with a season-long loan for Valencia defender Aymen Abdennour a last resort.
