LUIZ
David Luiz was the “real deal” in Chelsea‘s 2-0 win over
Southampton on Sunday afternoon, according to Garth Crooks.
The 29-year-old defender made six clearances, two blocks and
won two tackles during the game against Claude Puel’s side, in his sixth
appearance since returning to the Blues from Paris Saint-Germain.
The former Tottenham Hotspur forward says David Luiz is now
taking his defending seriously, with him standing defiantly in Antonio Conte’s
system:
“Eden Hazard and Diego Costa will get the headlines but
their performance against a very good Southampton team doesn’t tell the entire
story of Chelsea’s resurgence” Crooks wrote for BBC.

“The real deal is David Luiz at the centre of defence. I
said after their clean sheet against Leicester City that here is a player who
is taking defending his goal and goalkeeper very seriously.
“I’ve no doubt that the Italian ‘catenaccio’ (bolt the door)
philosophy has been embedded into a transformed back five by Blues boss Antonio
Conte, but Luiz stands defiant at the heart of that new regime.”
Conte’s side have won their
last four consecutive games in the Premier League, following their two defeats
to Arsenal and Liverpool, ahead of their clash with Everton at Stamford Bridge
on Saturday.
