MARTIN KEOWN
Jose Mourinho has been warned
that his negative attitude and a penchant for being sent to the stands will be
causing concern in the Manchester United boardroom.
Sportsmail columnist
Martin Keown suggested the powers that be at Old Trafford will be unhappy with
the image Mourinho is beginning to create around Manchester United after the
Portuguese was sent from the touchline in Sunday's 1-1 draw with West Ham.
The Special One was given his
marching orders by referee Jon Moss after kicking a water bottle in frustration
and confronting fourth official Anthony Taylor following Moss' decision to book
Paul Pogba for simulation.
Replays show the Frenchman
clearly dived and Moss was right to book him and, speaking on Match of the Day
2 on Sunday night, Keown said he could not understand why Mourinho reacted in
such a manner.
Keown said: 'We can only
imagine that Mourinho feels that Pogba has been fouled. This is a massive
overreaction. It is not like it is a penalty decision. I don’t get it. He knows
he's going to get sent off.'
The former Arsenal defender
went on to say that Mourinho will need to 'keep a lid' on his short temper or
risk upsetting those above him in the Manchester United hierarchy.
He continued: 'Listen, he’s
in a massive job and he needs to keep that lid on things. People say “you’re a
former Arsenal player and you don’t want to see Manchester United do well”, but
we do want to see good football.
'They were unlucky today but
the hierarchy will not be happy with the image he is creating around that
football club; he is overreacting.
'It is the second time it has
happened and he needs to keep a lid on it.'
It was the second time in
three Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford that Mourinho has watched a chunk
of the match from the director's box after he suffered a similar fate against
Burnley when Mark Clattenburg ordered him to the stands after a foul-mouthed
altercation at half-time.
Mourinho served a one-match
touchline ban after he admitted using abusive and/or insulting words towards a
match official and accepted the standard penalty. He was also fined £50,000 for
comments towards referee Anthony Taylor prior to Manchester United's game
against Liverpool.
The Football Association will
wait for Moss to submit his official report before starting an investigation
but if he is found guilty of another improper conduct charge he could be facing
a two-match stadium ban.
