Chelsea set to continue pursuit of Santos midfielder Thiago Maia

MAIA

Chelsea will revive their interest in Santos midfielder Thiago Maia in January.

The 19-year-old was discussed by Chelsea in late July prior to his participation in the Olympics with Brazil but his club Santos were reluctant to sell before the end of their season.

Chelsea are willing to offer around £15million for the defensive midfielder when the Brazilian season finishes in December.

Maia is highly prized by Santos and has a contract until 2019.

Free agent Martin Caceres has been offered to Chelsea but the former Juventus defender's injury record, plus the arrival of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso, means he may be more likely to stay in Italy at this stage with Roma and Inter Milan showing an interest.

Chelsea have also made enquiries about Hoffenheim defender Niklas Sule ahead of a possible bid next summer.

The Blues will welcome back Andreas Christensen from Borussia Monchengladbach but need to strengthen with John Terry turning 36 in December and Branislav Ivanovic turning 33 in February.
Sule has made 76 Bundesliga appearances for Hoffenheim and made his debut for the senior Germany team in the 2-0 win against Finland last Wednesday.

Liverpool have also watched him closely as have Napoli.

His agent Karlheinz Forster confirmed to Bild: 'Yes, there was interest. The English have made it clear they'll still be interested next year.'
