N'Golo Kante turned down Manchester United to seal switch to Chelsea

KNATE

N'Golo Kante has explained how he resisted the overtures of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to join Chelsea this summer.

The midfielder moved to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City in a £29million deal, but only after snubbing the opportunity to be the rock at the heart of Mourinho's United side.

Kante said: 'It was amazing to have Mourinho call me, even though I'd been warned before how he would appeal to me.

“I listened to his arguments about why I should move to United. But at that time I was hesitant between staying at Leicester or leaving for Chelsea.

“My discussions with them were already well underway. But when I spoke, I had a good feeling with [Antonio] Conte.”

And the 25-year-old France international has certainly made a flying start to his Chelsea career, with wins over West Ham, Watford and Burnley making it the perfect start under Conte.

United went on to plug their midfield gap with the world record £89m signing of Kante's compatriot Paul Pogba and have also won all three of their opening Premier League fixtures.

Kante starred for Leicester as they defied the odds to claim a remarkable title triumph last season.

He completed the full 90 minutes as France beat Italy 3-1 in a friendly in Bari on Thursday evening.
