Sergio Busquets has signed a new contract with FC Barcelona
that ties him to the club until 2021, and an option for further renewal until
2023 will likely see the player end his career at the Nou Camp.
As reported
in May , the new contract is expected to carry a €200million release
clause and ends any chance of the midfielder reuniting with Pep Guardiola at
Manchester City.
Fast-tracked into the first team by Guardiola during his
first season in charge in 2008, Busquets now boasts 390 appearances, 12 goals
and a huge haul of trophies.
Since breaking into the first team Busquets has won: Three
Champions League titles, six La Liga trophies, four Copas del Rey, three Club
World Cups, three European Super Cups and five Spanish Super Cups. For Spain he
has also won two European Championships and a World Cup.
Busquets was taken off injured during Wednesday's 1-1 draw
with Atletico Madrid but was fit enough to pose with club president Josep Maria
Bartomeu as he signed his new contract.
"I hope to be able to retire at Barca," Busquets
said.
"It would be a dream.
"I'm excited to stay at my boyhood club. I hope that
during this new deal, like with the others, that we can celebrate many
successes."
