JOSE MOURINHO
Manchester United were terrible defensively and offered
next to nothing going forward - and the boss has to sort it quickly.
I HAVE never seen Jose Mourinho looking so thoroughly
embarrassed — and with good reason.
His side was just that, an absolute embarrassment to the
Manchester United name, from start to finish.
They were terrible defensively and offered next to nothing
going forward. And the biggest worry for Mourinho is that he still has no idea what his best
team is.
Centre-half is obviously a big problem; Daley Blind was run
ragged at the back.
And on the right side of the defence you have a guy in
Antonio Valencia who was bought years ago as a right-winger and is now
considered United’s
first-choice right-back.
And he was actually one of their better players at Stamford
Bridge!
Paul Pogba is doing nothing to justify his £89million
transfer fee.
Chelsea 4-0 Manchester United: Jose Mourinho stunned as the
Blues thrash Utd.
He has been tried as a holding midfielder without much
success and he is not looking any better as an attacking midfielder. He may end
up showing why United were prepared to pay so much money for him — but when?
Zlatan Ibrahimovic's goals have dried up since his fine form
at the start of the season
And up front Zlatan Ibrahimovic does not look like scoring
at the moment.
He started the season well but he has not been at the races
for the last five or six games.
Mourinho cannot have expected things to be so bad when he
took over at Old Trafford.
He has a massive task on his hands just to make United
competitive with the top teams in the Premier
League. Look at their performances against the leading sides — well
beaten by Manchester
City, hopelessly negative in a shocker at Liverpool and then smashed
by Chelsea.
I accept Pedro’s goal after 30 seconds was a massive
confidence boost for Chelsea but that does not take away from the fact there
was no sort of response from the opposition.
Sir Alex Ferguson must have been wondering what the hell is
going on as he watched this shambles from the stands.
Louis van Gaal spent a fortune — Mourinho has done the same
thing — and this is what they have got to show for that huge investment?
One of the most worrying things for Mourinho is the fact the
players are not playing for him the way you would expect — worrying echoes of the
way things were just before he left Chelsea ten months ago.
I’m not suggesting he is on his way out again or anything
like that, just that he has got to find a group of players who will sweat blood
for him and for the United jersey.
And quickly.
He can probably take encouragement from the way Antonio
Conte has turned things round at Chelsea.
That comes after a sticky patch when they were outplayed by
both Liverpool and Arsenal.
David Luiz was badly exposed in those games, so Stamford
Bridge boss Conte changed it to three at the back to provide him with cover and
to allow Luiz to carry on bringing the ball out of defence.
Eden Hazard didn't have the best relationship with Mourinho
but is back to his best under Conte
Conte is also getting the best out of Eden Hazard. He was
top class yesterday — vision, control, balance, awareness, he showed the lot.
Hazard was one of the guys who became isolated under
Mourinho and he clearly had a point to prove.
But Chelsea were sharper, stronger, quicker and basically superior
to United in every department.
When you run out on to a pitch you usually take a look at
your opposite number and, if you have got anything about you, then you are
going to think: “Yeah, I’m going to get the better of him today.”
I don’t know if any of the United team felt that way at the
start — they certainly couldn’t say it at the finish.
