Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has insisted that
Chelsea‘s defence seemed impenetrable today, and believes that they are well
and truly back on form. Antonio Conte’s men travelled to Southampton to face a
team that had been unbeaten in their last five Premier League matches, but
dispatched them with confidence and came away 2-0 winners. Having endured
issues with his side’s defending earlier in the campaign, Conte has got his men
operating within a compact structure that looks extremely hard to pierce or
stretch.
Wright said on the 6-0-6 football phone in show:
“Chelsea looked very solid at the back today and going
forward you look at Hazard and Costa. Victor Moses looks almost like a new
signing – Conte has got him firing. They took a season off last year I think.
Players downed tools with Jose but they showed towards the end their quality
and they’re back under this new manager.
Chelsea got off to a flying start yet again as Eden Hazard
opened the scoring with a powerful strike from a relatively tight angle. The
Belgian continues to flourish in his newly established freedom and wandered
over to the right wing to make a break into the box.
Victor Moses’s supplied further evidence that he is
comfortable in his wing-back role, and provided Hazard with a through ball for
the opener.
Chelsea then showed their defensive solidarity, inviting
Southampton on before winning the ball back and forcing them to try and quell
their surges forward. In the 55th minute Hazard turned provider, feeding Diego
Costa on the edge of the box.
The Spaniard, who is not known for his long-range goals and
perhaps that fact ran through the Southampton defenders’ minds, was afford
space to pick his spot before expertly curling the ball into the far corner.
The Blues’ win today means that they remain just one point
behind Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.
