JOSE MOURINHO
The Manchester United boss suffered a nightmare on his
return to Stamford Bridge as defensive mix-ups hand the 'Special One' his
biggest league defeat.
JOSE MOURINHO admits
that his side has paid the price for “incredible defensive mistakes” as he
suffered his heaviest Premier League defeat as a manager.
Only
against Barcelona in November 2010 did he lose by a greater margin in all
competitions, and it’s a result that is hard for the Manchester United boss to
swallow.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Mourinho said: “It started badly after a few seconds.
We are close to the 1-1 and after another defensive mistake and it is 2-1. You
come with a strategy, you cannot concede a goal in the way we did.
“We
were coming to have an offensive approach, we wanted to create chances, we
showed that after the 1-0. The second and the third were counter-attack goals.
If we score a goal like we almost did for the 2-1 the game would be different.
Goals from Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante killed United off and left
them six points off the top of the table and only seven off the drop zone.
"It
is one of those days when you give the advantage to opponents by doing
nothing. We made incredible defensive mistakes, individual mistakes and
you pay for that."
The
last time United lost by 4 or more goals away
from home in the Premier League was v Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 1999.
"In
terms of points, we got zero points, we lose three points. We are six points
from the top, three from the top four, we now need to win matches.
"We need to win our matches now, which are not easy, we
need to win to close that gap, after these last three matches, we made two out
of nine, we now need points."
The
53-year-old stood in front of MUTV cameras to issue a 'heartfelt' apology to
the fans after his side's miserable display.
"They
kept going for 90 minutes in an unbelievable way, the fans that we have all
around the world they are obviously with a very bad feeling and I feel so sorry
for them," Mourinho said.
"I
have to apologise for that and the only thing I can say is that I am Man United
100%, not 99% and 1% for Chelsea or any other club and because of that I feel
deeply the situation.
"But
there is only one answer, like I was telling the players, there is only one
answer - training tomorrow and we fight on."
As the
full time whistle was blown on Mourinho's humiliating return to West London, he
appeared to pull to Conte to one side with a war of words before disappearing
down the tunnel.
He was
inevitably asked about the incident in his post match interview but refused to
reveal what was said between the pair.
"It was fine, I was not expecting anything different
here. The crowd behaved in a normal way. My words were with Antonio Conte were for him, not for you," dodged
Mourinho, as he was quizzed by Sky Sports.
However,
SunSport can reveal Mourinho told Conte not to ‘humiliate’ him,
referring to the Chelsea boss urging the home fans to increase the volume
late in the second half.
